Final blog conclusion

There seems to be a rise on hacking. To sum it up, it seems to be the new phase of technology. Cyber warfare and Cyber crime, You need to do your best to keep your computers safe and healthy from any kind of virus attacks. You never know what a virus might strike or a hacker might attack your system whether it be at work , school or your own home.

The U.S. is preparing for cyber war fare by protecting the computer systems.

This article states "every government conscious of strategic importance of cyber security and of the investments of other countries in cyber warfare capability is improving its effort. Last week I wrote about Russian government and the Putin’s request to reinforce the garrison of the fifth domain, the cyber space, through a series of investment to secure national critical infrastructures from cyber attacks, in the previous months we have spoken of Iran, China and North Korea, all those governments are moving the battlefield in the digital world."

Also they say "the US government has decided an increase of 4000 units for the Defense Department’s Cyber Command, considering that actually the Command is composed by 900 specialists it has been decided to quadruple the resources dedicated to the operations in the cyberspace"

Let's hope Microsoft keeps developing stronger anti virus protection. Even though your computer might be protected by your anti malware and anti virus programs , there are always risks to any computer. Now that we have finished the assessment part of the class. I'm more aware of how vulnerable my computer really is. This has been a fun assignment and I'll continue to monitor these viruses and see how they pan out. Just hope an attack on the power grid never happens that's my biggest fear. Not much we can do if it does.

Government declares cyber war on hackers.

Here's a unique twist on cyber warfare our government is declaring cyber war on hackers themselves. The government vowes to take out cyber hackers who attack against agency websites.

Hackers aimed to take out government agencies though they have certain defense systems in place. The government has been prepared for cyber attacks. They will develop a cyber warfare system adding to the cyber threats that are of concern.

The article states "Although attack intensity levels remain moderate, efforts will be made to solve the problem and bring the culprits to justice on a case-by-case basis", says Gp Capt Somsak.

The hacking group anonymous has claimed the attack on Nov 30 on Thailand's secure government computers. They stole passwords and important information about police officers and records.

They state that it is sad that police officers are using passwords like 12345, seems a bit easy for hackers to break into someone's account that way. Police websites are on the rise for attacks in the U.S. and the U.S. government vows to do something about it.

The hackers had left a note telling Thailand government how easy it was to hack into their system. That seems kind of scary in itself. It seems a lot of hacking groups are targeting big government buildings. With groups like ISIS on the rise it certainly is a scary though knowing our Police and Government buildings are future victims of cyber warfare.

Vtech British Toy Company hacked.

Vtech is a British Toy company that was just hacked. Again it seems like there are hackings every day almost or at least every week. On the heels of Black Friday I would imagine that there were a lot of attempted hackings going on.

Each of these hacks seem to target similar things or people's finances. Some are different but the most of them seem to effect the customers. By stealing bank account information etc.

This article states "A large amount of data, which looked like it could be from the hack, was seen online but has now been hidden, according to some experts. It also appeared to include a considerable number of children's names, dates of birth and gender."

It seems these people who do the hacking are getting more and more dangerous. Not sure there is an answer to the questions that we seek.

This article has some good tips on how to prevent cyber attacks. They say that malware attacks seem to happen more on Mondays than any other day. The attackers know that there are more people online, so there will be more attacks. Cyber Monday is not a one-day thing, it's the beginning of a sustained focus on attacks that go after people in the holiday shopping season

Cyber warefare

Cyber Warefare

In this modern age countries are attacking each other through Cyber Warefare. Anonymous is a hacking group and they recently have threatened to take down the terrorist organization ISIS.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/anonymous-s-cyber-war-with-isis-could-compromise-terrorism-intelligence/

The computer-hacker federation known as Anonymous claims to have disabled at least 5,500 pro-ISIS Twitter accounts and exposed thousands of the terror group’s supporters who use the social media site. If cyber warfare is good for anything I would not be apposed to have them take down ISIS.

The Anonymous group has claimed to be at war with ISIS after the Paris attack. Anonymous has been known for various cyber attacks throughout the years. And they aren't afraid to go up against the ISIS hacking organization.

The article states "The hacktivist collective does this by exposing its adversaries’ Twitter accounts (and reporting them to the company) or paralyzing opposition Web sites by flooding them with online traffic. The group’s secretive nature gives it a lot of latitude for operating outside the law. "

I'm glad cyber warfare is being put to good use and not destroying everyday ordinary people like you and me who use the internet for online shopping. I do not tolerate computer hacking for the most part and condemn 99 percent of attacks on people, this is the 1 percent I can deal with.

School Hackings.

Security Schools and Teenagers.

There was a recent hack to a school recently. Which makes me wonder if this is due to bad parenting or just curious kids? Who knows. But teenage hacking seems to be on the rise as well. I think it's more out of curiousity and what they can get away with.

This next article I read was based in Panther Creek High School.

The article states "
The 17-year-old student, who lives in Morrisville, was seen on security video sneaking into the school office after school on Oct. 22 and was later confronted by a teacher in a locked classroom with what appeared to be a laptop computer, according to the search warrant.
Two weeks earlier, the PowerSchool system, a state database that tracks student attendance and grades, at Panther Creek High was hacked into on three separate occasions, and the grades and class ranks of six students were changed."

This article reminds me of the 80's movie war games were the kid hacks into NORAD. That school must not have had very good security. Someone like a teenage kid can waltz into the school and get passcodes it's pretty scary in itself.

Talk Talk security breach.

Recently a British cell phone company TALK TALK has had a security breach. The company said 28,000 credit and debit card numbers, with some digits obscured, stolen by the hackers cannot be used for payment and customers cannot be identified from the data.

It seems this kind of thing isn't stopping that there really is nothing we can do about security breaches and this makes companies look vulnerable. And they are. Do you really want to invest in a company where your personal information will be stolen? But how do you know which company is safe and which is not. I guess it's a gamble that most of us have to take. It feels like every day there is some company that has a security breach or has been hacked into from the outside or even the inside.

There were apparently two teenage boys arrested in the cyber attack at TALK TALK. It seems these hackers are young and wanting to disrupt our every day life. I think they get some sort of adrenaline high from it. Can it be stopped? If companies don't invest the time into protecting their own assets then we will continue to see more hacking. The company has told people to check their emails and personal accounts, change passwords etc. But in reality there isn't much that can be done about this. Hopefully someone is working on ways to prevent these kind of attacks.

Schools & Security

While we are on the topic of schools and work places being vulnerable. I think this is a very good topic to talk about. If you are going to have a school campus you may want to have more cameras and security around the computer labs. I'm not saying all the time but it may be a good idea to monitor what your students are looking at. IT security or campus security can't stop everyone from checking out inappropriate sites or using the network for malicious behavior but if they stay vigilant then these acts might decrease.

This reminds me of one of my jobs I was working at, I was working at Sun Micro-systems in Hillsboro as a contractor and we noticed one of our co workers was looking at inappropriate material on the web, we didn't know how to react so we just let it go. I think companies need to address this in meetings. I've seen people at jobs use the internet all the time for non related work stuff. We're all guilty of it at some point. The reason not to look at bad websites is mainly the factor that when you connect to these websites viruses can find your email addresses just by going on to these sites and by the time you know the whole school or work place could have been infected by some kind of computer virus. This has happened in the past.

This is the article I read and it's very interesting:
