Network security and children,

How to keep your kids safe on line and away from targeted cyber attacks. They may not know what emails to not open or links to not click. It's very important to teach your kids on line safety. Before you know it your child could have a virus infected on your computer by just opening an email. If you child is at an age where they can understand email and know how to open email you should tell them to look for emails that don't look right or aren't from someone they know and tell them not to open it. It could save you a lot of money in the long run. I have seen people let their kids use the internet which is great and can be a very good learning tool. Just make sure the child knows the difference , it can be taught very easily. Start them young, start talking to them about emails and viruses at a young age eventually it will click. I learned how to use computers at age 8. Haven't stopped. I knew about viruses in the late 80's early 90's. Even though not as common as now I knew about hackers and people had the ability to mess up your computers even at age 10. Kids pick up things and easily can understand visual things if you show them don't open emails that you don't know or don't click on links you don't understand. Set parental controls on your computers. Make sure you children know internet safety.

Recent internet hacks.

There was an article in the news about an ISIS hacker who recently passed U.S. military data to terrorists. A  man from Kosovo was arrested and was operating as a middle mad for ISIS operating in Malaysia. The man stole data from 1,300 military personnel by hacking into a U.S. military base. He got caught because he used his real name on twitter. He openly communicated with ISIS memebers online, Obviously this guy wasn't very smart in protecting himself from authorities. He was a leader of a Kosvo hacking organization Kosva Hacker Security, Although with that name you would think the guy could have prevented himself from being caught.

Cell phones are also being targeted people can hack into cell phones using radio singals. That's scary in itself. If your cell phone starts acting weird and doing things you didn't make it do then you've probably been hacked.

The article states, "The radio transmitter sends radio waves to silently trigger voice commands on any iPhone or Android phone (with a pair of microphone-enabled headphones plugged in) that has Siri or Google Now enabled respectively".

Very interesting read from this aticle - .

I am baffled more and more each way and these new ways of hacking into places and people's computers.

Recent Cyber Threats.

Here is an article about a cyber threat on a South Korea subway system.

http://www.thecyberwire.com/current.html

The article explains North Korea has attempted to shut down the South Korea subway system through cyber attacks. That's pretty scary. North Korea has some pretty serious hackers.

I've also read about hackers wanting to shut down ISIS terrorist group. Hackers in Jordan and the Uk are the ones that are trying to hack ISIS. Once again the threat of international hacking is on the rise. Each day I hear more on the news about this. And it isn't going away anytime soon. How can we prevent this and what can be done? I'm not so sure at this point the only way to counter this is to let it happen and learn from the attacks. Hopefully the attacks aren't so serious. I still have major fears about a power grid attack that would set us back to the stone age or hacking into satellite systems.

I also just read about nuclear power sites being target as cyber threats. That's also very scary indeed.
http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-34423419

The article states that the security systems of some of the nuclear power plants are faulty by design. Such attacks even though may not happen still need to be considered. Anything is possible in the world of cyber warfare. A nuclear meltdown because of a cyber attack is not something I want to witness.

Computer Viruses

I've been reading more articles on computer viruses and they are very fascinating. Everything from Email hacking, phishing to malicious attacks using IP addresses. There seems to be no end in sight to this kind of computer hacking. As I posted in earlier blog that this is becoming of a huge concern. How do we stop this from happening. I'm not sure there is an answer for that.

A virus called Code Red was a Dos based virus attack. Very scary indeed. It's almost impossible to stop this kind of attacking.

The original Code Red worm initiated a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the White House. That means all the computers infected with Code Red tried to contact the Web servers at the White House at the same time, overloading the machines.

This kind of attack seems common as well. Dos attacks that over load the system just like Email attacks that can break down your computer. Someday we may not be able to stop this from happening. Let's just hope the attacks don't trigger a world war or nuclear meltdown of some kind.

Microsoft creates patches but the patches don't always work.
